Fraunhofer UMSICHT Spin-off Susteen Technologies UK in England
Fraunhofer UMSICHT in Sulzbach-Rosenberg has developed an innovative process for the Thermo - Catalytic Reforming TCR®. To promote the »Clean Technology«, Fraunhofer UMSICHT founded a spin -off company »Susteen Technologies GmbH« based in Sulzbach-Rosenberg. Since the end of March 2016 there is now also a spin-off in England with »Susteen Technologies UK« established.
The demand for the technologies of Fraunhofer UMSICHT in England is good. England is therefore for Fraunhofer UMSICHT a strategically important location. The other spin -off company of Fraunhofer UMSICHT »Susteen Technologies UK« thus has created a connection to potential customers in England. The spin-off will focus on thermo-chemical conversion processes, offering solutions for the efficient generation of electricity and heat, as well as other sustainable products from biomass and plastic residues. The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft has granted Susteen Technologies GmbH an exclusive worldwide license to the TCR® technology for the treatment of biomass and waste residues for the production of sustainable fuels.
From the idea to the customer
The technology has been at pilot plant scale (up to 2 kg / h) and extensively tested since 2013 and the researchers successfully tested a wide variety of feedstocks. At the Fraunhofer Institute UMSICHT also a pilot plant with a continuous feed capacity of approximately 30 kg / h is constructed. Susteen Technologies is actively developing biomass applications based on TCR® technology and provides the design and delivery of TCR® reactor plants. Currently, the young company focused on the commercial demonstration of the technology, to demonstrate the economic viability of sustainable and efficient energy from biomass residues. First customer projects from Susteen Technologies have already been won in Germany, Italy and Switzerland. The new spin-off in England is the result of many years of research, know-how and strenght.
Fraunhofer UMSICHT in England
Since the beginning of 2016, the conditions are clarified for the establishment of a »Joint Research Platform of University of Birmingham and Fraunhofer Institute UMSICH« in Birmingham (England). Professor Dr. Andreas Hornung, Head of Fraunhofer UMSICHT in Sulzbach-Rosenberg, has since April 2014 Chaired in Bioenergy at the University of Birmingham which has allowed this connection. The placement on site is a strategically necessary step, because England is an important partner country for Fraunhofer UMSICHT. In addition to the economic side of the doctoral programs at the University of Birmingham are an interesting option for the scientists. Dr. Miloud Ouadi is main contact and local coordinator of the »Joint Research Platform at the University of Birmingham and Fraunhofer Institute UMSICHT« in Birmingham. Furthermore the T - ERA project has just been launched in England in addition to a new 1.2 M Pound EPSRC project which will train a new PhD student on the TCR® technology.
