Dr. Matthias Franke was appointed honorary professor

Dr. Matthias Franke, head of Department Recycling Management of the Fraunhofer UMSICHT, was appointed an honorary professor at the University of Birmingham. Professor Sir David Eastwood, Vice-Chancellor and principal of the University of Birmingham, gave the title.

Wednesday 17 May 2017 marked the official launch of a collaborative Joint Research Platform between the Birmingham Energy Institute and Fraunhofer UMSICHT at the University of Birmingham. This event was also used to appointed Dr. Matthias Franke solemnly as an honorary professor at the »School of Engineering, College of Engineering and Physical Sciences« of the University of Birmingham. The official declaration and confirmation of the three-year honorary professorship took place on 26 June 2017.

At the University of Rostock, Matthias Franke graduated from the Agricultural Engineering and Environmental Protection Engineering Program and subsequently promoted in the field of waste management. Already in 2006, he moved to Sulzbach-Rosenberg with his family and has been working for the research institute since then. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the German Society for Waste Management (DGAW) and a member of the scientific advisory board of the Circular Economy Coalition for Europe (CEC4Europe) and the European Biomass Conference and Exhibition (EUBCE). Since 2009, he has been teaching at the Technical University of Munich, where he teaches waste management in the international study program Sustainable Resource Management.

It is mainly due to the initiative and the long-term commitment of our Institute Director, Professor Dr. Andreas Hornung, in England and Birmingham respectively. In my new position, I will be able to address the research topics of Fraunhofer UMSICHT to the students and to initiate project co-operation between our institute and the University of Birmingham«, said Hon. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Matthias Franke.

Professor Dr. Andreas Hornung is the initiator of the joint research platform between the Birmingham Energy Institute and Fraunhofer UMSICHT, and in this context welcomes the appointment and the associated tighter integration of the sites. »The joint research platform was an important step, enabling cross-country, human-based exchanges and international research«, said Prof. Dr. Andreas Hornung.
