Prof. Dr. Andreas Hornung, Director of Fraunhofer UMSICHT Institute Branch Sulzbach-Rosenberg (2nd from the left), drove the Minister from the hall back to the main entrance of Fraunhofer UMSICHT to demonstrate the functionality.

Alois Karl, a member of the Bundestag, had made the appointment possible and invited Federal Minister of Education and Research Wanka to his constituency and Fraunhofer UMSICHT. The Federal Minister, as well as District Councilor Richard Reisinger, Michael Göth (1st Mayor of Sulzbach-Rosenberg) and other members of the CSU faction came to Sulzbach-Rosenberg to find out about the research of Fraunhofer UMSICHT.

In her speech, Johanna Wanka pointed out that it is important to carry out research that is application-oriented. This can be found at Fraunhofer UMSICHT and named the research institute a parade example for working, applied research. She also highlighted the fact that Fraunhofer UMSICHT has a positive effect on the region.

Green fuel from residues

The energy transition and the problem of how energy can be saved and won is an acute issue, emphasized Johanna Wanka. That Fraunhofer UMSICHT in Sulzbach-Rosenberg is working on this problem and offers solutions impressed the minister very much (such as: to produce fuel from waste or to recycle raw materials). Prof. Dr. Andreas Hornung presented the research achievements of the institute as well as the lessons learned from the work over the last five years in the areas of recycling of raw materials and the production of green fuel from residues.

During the tour of the Technika, the delegation was able to convince itself of the TCR® technology and the application possibilities. Thus, Minister Johanna Wanka was able to refuel a car during the visit in order to test the functionality of the fuel. Professor Dr. Andreas Hornung drove the minister from the hall back to the main entrance of Fraunhofer UMSICHT. Johanna Wanka was visibly impressed.

»We need not only fundamental research, but also practical application«, stressed the Minister, because that is the only way to create the energy transition. The research can provide answers to the question of how we can store the energy gained from waste or renewable raw materials, she sees at Fraunhofer UMSICHT.

Regional and international networking

In addition, Prof. Dr. Andreas Hornung told in his speech about the good networking in the region and the policy members, but also with the Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule OTH Amberg-Weiden and regional economic partners. He showed the international large-scale projects, such as the newly installed research platform together with the University of Birmingham or the large-scale project for preparation a national waste management strategy for Kuwait. Fraunhofer UMSICHT is about keeping the balance, thus being regionally and simultaneously internationally visible.
