Thomas Fehn on innovative recycling technology for road demolition waste and Dr. Alexander Hofmann on synergies between mechanical and chemical recycling of plastics

Fraunhofer UMSICHT is participating in ACHEMA 2024 in Frankfurt am Main with two presentations. In these lectures, Thomas Fehn will present the plant commissioned at Fraunhofer UMSICHT with the innovative technology for recycling tar-containing road demolition waste. In another session, Dr. Alexander Hofmann will talk about synergies between mechanical and chemical recycling of plastics.

In the »InnoTeer« project, several Fraunhofer Institutes, including Fraunhofer UMSICHT, are developing a multi-stage process to efficiently process road demolition waste containing tar in decentralized plants. Thomas Fehn (Group Manager Chemical Recycling and Downstream Processes) will present the initial findings from the project in his lecture. In this project, Fraunhofer UMSICHT is pursuing a new approach for the tar-containing parts. These are not incinerated in a CO2-intensive process as before, but pyrolyzed at lower temperatures in the absence of oxygen. The tar is thermally decomposed and critical substances are rendered harmless. The aggregate remains undamaged. A synthesis gas is produced as a by-product, so to speak, which can be used to generate energy.

Dr. Alexander Hofmann (Head of Advanced Carbon Conversion Technologies) talks about the synergies that exist between the mechanical and chemical recycling of plastics. The main focus here is on the consideration of economic, ecological and social aspects.
