Dr. Alexander Hofmann with lecture on »InnoKuR – a path to climate-friendly plastics by replacing fossil raw materials«

Fraunhofer UMSICHT is participating in the Renewable Materials Conference 2025 in Cologne, organized by the Nova Institute. In his presentation, Alexander Hofmann, head of the Advanced Carbon Conversion Technologies department, will talk about the possibility of producing stable, high-quality crude oils from biogenic residues. He will also present innovative processes for the post-treatment of biogenic pyrolysis oils in order to meet the specifications required for steam crackers.

In his presentation, Alexander Hofmann explains the InnoKuR approach - a path to climate-friendly plastics by replacing fossil raw materials.

This involves the use of waste biomass as a raw material for steam crackers and new developments in conversion technologies and new approaches for further processing. Our goal is to make conventional plastics CO2-neutral by replacing fossil raw materials with renewable ones.

You will learn more about an innovative approach to the production and processing of pyrolysis oils from biogenic residues as an alternative, non-fossil carbon source for the petrochemical industry. The technology of thermo-catalytic reforming will be presented, a combined pyrolysis and reforming process that produces stable, high-quality crude oils from biogenic residues that can be co-processed in a refinery. In addition, novel processes for the post-treatment of biogenic pyrolysis oils will be presented in order to meet the specifications required for steam crackers.
