Prof. Dr.-Ing. Manfred Renner and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Matthias Franke give a presentation on »Chemical Recycling and Beyond: Current R&D Approaches to Advance Plastics Circularity«

Fraunhofer UMSICHT is participating in the ACI event »Future of Chemical Recycling Europe 2026.« In their presentation, Manfred Renner, Director of the Institute, and Matthias Franke, Deputy Director of the Sulzbach-Rosenberg branch, will discuss current research and development approaches for promoting the recyclability of plastics.

The 2026 edition of the ACI event  »Future of Chemical Recycling« will examine the regulatory, technical, and market conditions driving commercial adoption across Europe. The sessions will address challenges in raw material sourcing, design for recyclability, mass balance compliance, and downstream markets, with contributions from leaders in policy, technology, and procurement.

Participants will meet a high-level audience of R&D, business development, and sustainability leaders from the chemical industry, recyclers, and technology developers. The event will highlight key investment trends and priorities for scaling up that are shaping the future of chemical recycling.

In their presentation, Manfred Renner and Matthias Franke provide interesting insights into the following topics:

  • Current market situation and plans in the field of chemical recycling
  • Influencing factors and framework conditions for further development
  • Expanding the feedstock base for thermochemical conversion – sorting residues, textiles, composites, WEEE up to biogenic residues
  • Alternative recovery and utilization processes for fibres, char and critical raw materials
  • Production of high quality aromatic hydrocarbons via auto-catalytic reforming
