Fraunhofer UMSICHT is taking part in EEM26, the International Conference on the European Market, in Trondheim, Norway.

Shashank Deepak Prabhu, from the Thermochemical Conversion Technologies Department, will speak about a current project focusing on the production of energy carriers via thermochemical conversion (TCC) and the associated impacts on the electricity grid.

Energy sources from waste: scenarios for 2035

An initial simulation was carried out to understand the processing of biogenic waste, in particular sewage sludge (SS), with the aim of generating various forms of energy. In a unique experiment, the system is compared across three scenarios: gas-fired, electrified, and electrified with battery integration.

The year 2035 was chosen as the reference year to investigate the impact of such a system on the electricity grid. This initial assessment forms the starting point for future scenarios regarding the integration of renewable energies and will highlight the role of the TCC technologies developed by Fraunhofer UMSICHT. The current work may open up further application possibilities for TCC technologies in the context of sustainable development, waste processing and the technology’s resource-saving potential.
