    An innovative technology for WEEE recycling in Ghana

    How can the practice of WEEE recycling in Ghana be improved through a technology transfer from Germany? This question is being addressed by a project led by Fraunhofer UMSICHT and funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment. The aim of the project is to examine how the existing treatment can be supplemented by thermochemical methods and optimised sales channels. This can increase the added value locally and at the same time reduce the environmental and health impacts.

  • The eMISKWaste project team has reached a major milestone. In two final conferences, the »Kuwait National Waste Management Strategy 2040« as well as the »Landfill Management and Rehabilitation Strategy« were presented to his Excellency Sheikh Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Humoud Al-Sabah, representatives of EPA departments as well as of other Kuwaiti authorities, universities and industry. Fraunhofer UMSICHT has worked on the project in Kuwait since 2017 together with ten partners from Germany and Kuwait. Activities included a country-wide waste and landfill survey, the development of an GIS-based database and customized applications as well as the development of the Kuwait National Waste Management Strategy together with several Kuwaiti stakeholders.

  • Refinery to produce aviation fuels from sewage sludge

    Bayernoil Raffineriegesellschaft and the Fraunhofer Institute UMSICHT in Sulzbach-Rosenberg want to advance the large-scale production of sustainable fuels. The focus of the announced cooperation is the further development and upscaling of the TCR technology developed by Fraunhofer UMSICHT for the conversion of residual and waste materials into »green« crude oil.

    Fraunhofer CCPE publishes position paper and research programme on plastics recycling

    The Fraunhofer Cluster of Excellence Circular Plastics Economy CCPE has presented a position paper on the state of the art in science and technology of recycling technologies for plastics. The focus is on chemical recycling processes. A market analysis shows current industry activities. In addition, the Fraunhofer competence landscape in plastics recycling is presented in an overview.

  • State of Bavaria supports development project / 2021

    Sustainable waste management for Tunisia

    The project for the modernisation of waste management in Tunisia under the leadership of the Fraunhofer Institute UMSICHT Sulzbach-Rosenberg is entering the implementation phase. In three model regions the cleanliness in the municipalities as well as the added value through recycling will be increased. At the same time, the pollutant load is to be reduced by collecting hazardous waste separately. The Bavarian State Chancellery is funding the project with EUR 960,000.

  • The Fraunhofer Cluster of Excellence Circular Plastics Economy CCPE and its Institute for Environmental, Safety and Energy Technology UMSICHT have developed an advanced recycling process for used plastics. The pilot project with SABIC and Procter & Gamble serves to demonstrate the feasibility of closed-loop recycling for single-use facemasks.

  • Change of leadership

    The Sulzbach-Rosenberg branch of the Fraunhofer Institute UMSICHT has a new director. On 1 March, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Matthias Franke took over the leadership role from Prof. Dr. Andreas Hornung. Hornung will remain with the institute section as Senior Expert for Bioeconomy. Samir Binder continues to be the deputy head of the institute section.

  • Electrochemical wastewater treatment generates hydrogen

    A novel electrochemical purification process for highly contaminated process wastewater is to generate hydrogen at the same time. In the AECO H2+ project, a test stand with electrolysis cell is being set-up to undertake test for industrial use of the technology. The project is carried out by Fraunhofer UMSICHT at its Sulzbach-Rosenberg site with the industrial partners DiaCCon GmbH (Fürth, and Blue Eden CleanTech Inc. (Calgary, Canada, and is funded within the framework of the Central Innovation Program for Medium-Sized Enterprises (ZIM).
